Mike Clements, Fund Manager

Mike has more than 20 years’ experience in the industry and over 12 years’ experience managing European equity portfolios. His investment career began in 1999 as a European equity analyst at UBS Asset Management. In 2008, he moved to Franklin Templeton Investments where he managed the €3 billion Franklin European Growth Fund and related mandates.

Between 2014 to 2020 he was Head of European Equities at Syz Asset Management, managing a range of Pan European and Europe ex. UK funds, including the Oyster Continental European Income Fund.

Gerrit Smit, Partner – Head of Equity Management

Gerrit is Head of Global Equity Management of Stonehage Fleming Investment Management UK and has overall responsibility for the specialist business unit, its Portfolio Management and Equity Research functions.

He established the Global Best Ideas Equity Management division in 2009. He guides the identification of businesses that meet the team’s quality threshold and only invests in best-of-breed companies that can clearly demonstrate sustainable quality, a particular strategic competitive edge and attractive value.

Gerrit spent the majority of his career at Sanlam Investment Management. Starting out as an Equity Analyst, he moved quickly up the ranks culminating in Chief Investment Strategist, and was involved in a number of the firm’s corporate actions and its foreign asset swap process. He was subsequently appointed as Chief Investment Officer in London for Sanlam’s International equity portfolios. He contributed to his strong track record in London as the Head of Research at a specialist fund manager before joining Stonehage Fleming.

Gerrit has over 30 years’ investment experience and holds a Hons B.Com degree from the University of Stellenbosch and the University of South Africa.

Simon Murphy, Fund Manager

Simon is the manager of the VT Tyndall Unconstrained UK Income Fund. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with PwC in 1997 before joining M&G Investments on the UK equity desk. He spent nearly 10 years at M&G, running the M&G UK Growth Fund from 2004 to 2007. In 2008 Simon moved to Merian Global Investors (formerly Old Mutual Global Investors) where he spent nearly 11 years heading up the UK Large Cap equities team and managing the Merian UK Equity fund.
