David Ridland, Partner & Chief Investment Officer

David’s investment career began during the Asian crisis in 1997 as a member of the Japanese equity team at Ignis AM. The team collected the Micropal award in 2000 for best risk adjusted returns having been wary of the TMT bubble.

In 2002 he moved to the UK Equity team at Ignis where he managed segregated and institutional mandates during which time he developed his investment database. In September 2008 he joined Barclays in order to incorporate his approach to large segregated and charity portfolios and establish his own track record. David co-founded Castlebay Investment Partners in April 2013.

James Sym, Portfolio Manager

James joined Goodhart in 2025. He has 18 years’ experience as an investor, of which 14 years are as a European portfolio manager. James started his career at Cazenove where he launched his first fund, before Cazenove was acquired by Schroders where he ran the award-winning European Alpha strategies, ultimately managing over £2.5bn of client’s capital. He left Schroders in 2020 to launch a European franchise at River Global, becoming appointed Head of Equities in 2022. He is one of the most well-known managers of European Equities in the UK market. 

From Goodhart, James continues to provide investment services to the RGI European fund as Investment Advisor. He also works closely with other members of the investment team, bringing his stock-picking skills and business-cycle approach to other Goodhart funds, most notably the Global Opportunities Trust. 

James holds a Masters degree from Cambridge University in Natural Sciences, specialising in materials technology and mineral physics, and has completed the CFA. 

Matthew Beddall, CEO & Fund Manager

Matthew worked at Winton for 17 years, eight of which he served as Chief Investment Officer. As CIO, he had responsibility for overseeing the firm’s investment activities, including the flagship Winton Futures Fund. During his tenure, Winton grew to have $32 billion in assets making it one of the largest hedge funds in Europe. He also sat on the Board as a Director, and on the Executive Committee.

Matthew previously graduated with a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science, and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Applied Statistics. His extensive professional experience has given him a strong set of investment beliefs, all of which he applies to his own money within the WS Havelock Global Select Fund.
